I reached the castle in time to here a girl's voice yelling, "You! You...You!" She sounded exasperated. To put it nicely. She must have gotten a reply and lowered her voice, because I heard a grumble, then nothing. Walking up the stairs, I paused in front of the library. No one was there, as usual. But the lights were on, not as usual. I could hear low grumbles again, and the sound of a creaky door opening. I mentally added OIL SECONDSTORY DOORS to my list of fix-its. I could see light in the hallway from another open door, and a figure standing stock still in the middle of it. Clearing my throat, I got up the nerve to say, "Hey? What's goin' on? Do ya know what needs repair today, Mr. Ed?" When the figure turned, I knew I had made a mistake. It definitely wasn't butler Ed. And somehow I knew it wasn't the old stiff. "Uhhhmm. Sorry, sir. I, ah, thought you were someone else." Then I saw it. There was a dragon in the room beyond. A very, very, angry dragon. Warily, I asked, "Sir, does our employer make a habit of keeping over large lizards nearby, or am I hallucinating?" Good going, smart one, I told myself tersely, when my query only seemed to irk the big bunch of mythical scales more.

behind me was the janitor guy, i had seen him from a distance before for some reason he thought i was Mr. Ed.... i turned and looked at him enjoying the surprised look in his young eyes. in front of me the girl was angerily talking to the dragon, in short angry breaths she sputtered. "You, You, You!" I looked derictly at the dragon and to the girl and said, "Hello my name is Rain, I am the librarian." brushing my dark blue hair back from my face i waited for her reply.

Now the dragon wasn't the only one irratated. At least anger got rid of nervousness. So I had been mistaken. The person in the doorway was a girl. The lights in the corridor weren't on, it wasn't my fault I couldn't see her face. "Sorry I called you sir, Ms. Rain, but I asked what the dragon was doing in here, NOT what your name was. I've been around here for two years and never seen any of you three. Though I'm guessin' you're the neice, right?" I asked the girl standing near the dragon. "Kiwi, or Kisi or something like that?" "The name's Kiri, not Kiwi." She snapped. "I don't know anymore than you do, so lay off." I wondered what had gotten her into a prickle, but considering there is a dragon in her room, I guess she has a right. The dragon glared at me, rustling it's flashing wings as it landed on the floor. "You did not give her your name, youngling," it rumbled. I shrugged. "Jaid, the low life repair man at your service, ladies and lizards." I know I should shut my trap while I'm ahead, even if I am annoyed. That hadn't stopped me yet, though, so I suppose it never will. Jamming my hands in my jeans' pockets, walking towards the bed, keeping clear of the dragon's tail and jaws, I bent to look at the scratch marks on the bedframe. The dragon couldn't have done better if it had taken a saw halfway through it. I whistled appreciatively when I saw state the underside of it was in. "Sheesh. Do you really expect to sleep in this, Ms. Kiri? Even if you," I told the dragon, "hadn't clawed it up with those great talons of yours, the old thing wouldn't have lasted much longer. The entire underside is moldy. Hey, Ms. Rain? Do you think the King o' the Castle would mind if it got replaced? If he says no to fixing it, show him the bottom of it. Pity. It is such a nice shade of green down there." Oh man. I am now officially in over my head. If I had ticked off the geezer's daughter, I would be outta a job in ten secs flat. And if I hadn't ticked off the dragon enough for it to kill me, I'd be surprised. As for the librarian, blue hair or no blue hair, I had a feeling she wouldn't do much to me. Still. A teenaged girl who was probably a spoiled brat and a dragon was bad enough.

Kiri sighed and plunked down in a chair. "Well," I growled, "Are you going to answer me or not?" I curled up on her moth eaten bed. Terrible, musty old thing. Rain suddenly came in the room. "You, you, you!" She shouted at me. "Silence hair confused chid." I snapped. "It isn't your business yelling at me for what your master requested me to do." She fumed at me. Kiri was a little bewildered, and begining to get angry. Another person came in. I demanded his name, he gave it. He was Jaid, the fix-it. He scolded me for tearing up the bed. His thoughts were of how much trouble he was getting into. I snorted and the bed changed, now it was a magnificent, CLEAN, fixed bed. I smiled. Much better. His face was one of shock. "Good boy," I walked over to him and stood up on my hind legs so that my face was level with his. (It is a misconception that dragons are huge. I am one of the larger ones, and I am only a man's length and a half long with a wingspan of 20 feet, the extra half of a man's lenghth of me is my tail.) "I would apprieciate it if you wouldn't call me lizard. You know better than that. You know what I am and what I can do. You are brave, but foolish, to confront me like that." I chuckled, "It's refreshing to have a knight around." I turned to Rain, "Now, if you insist that I leave, I can go straight to your master. Shall we show Kiri around now?" I flicked my tail and stalked out of the room.

I shook my head. The dragon had read my thoughts as clear as glass. As the others went outside, I started up the flight of stairs going to the third floor. I had a window to fix. Mr. Ed had promised to leave what I needed on the floor by it. Instead of repairing the window, I found myself watching the dragon as it took off. It was a bit smaller than what I would imagine, but I hadn't tried to imagine for a long time so it didn't really matter any way. A dragon. A real, honest to goodness dragon. I have to admit, that is a cool creature. A VERY cool creature. I wondered about Kiri. Earlier, I had dismissed her as some pampered princess. Now, thinking about it, I realized that she really didn't seem the princessy type. And what about that blue hair? Ms. Rain was an interesting character. Wonder why I never saw the other employees working for Kiri's uncle. For a while, even after the outlines of them had disappeared, I was in a kinda trance. When I came back down to earth, it was completely dark out and the moon had risen. Shoot. I might get the window half way decent before I had to head home, but there was no way I was gonna get it all decent.

I ended up finishing the job, even though I knew when I started that it would be a late finishing. Putting the tools in the near empty cement bucket, I started my way down the stairs. They cut out of old, worn stone and wood. Some of the wood was newer, from last summer, when I had spent two weeks fixing the deteriorating rail on one side and the planks under my feet. After getting to the ground story, I glanced at the grandfather clock in the hall. Eleven. I wasn't gonna have much sleep. Guess it was a good thing that in an hour it would be Saturday, rather than a weekday. Still, crap. It would take awhile for the cement and plaster to come of the tools. The bucket went into the sink. I turned on the water. I flipped on the only set of electric lights to be found in the old manor, and found out that Kiri was sitting casually on the table, folding and refolding an empty cigarette box.

I was tired of them bossing me around. The freaky librarian lady with the bad dye job, and the gator. "Look here Kiri, this is sixteenth century stonework... this staircase was replaced last summer, but the supports are still original....blah blah blah...." I was tired from the jetlag, and really wanting a cigarette. Finally, the two moved on and I ducked behind an alcove, listening to them talking to the imagined Kiri. I laughed to myself. Stooping, I retied my sneaker laces, so I wouldn't trip. Then, setting down the drafty corridor, I passed by an old grandfather clock. I couldn't resist - delicatly, I moved one of the hands an hour forward.
Shoving my hands into my hoodie pockets, I went on, and found a small room around another bend. I could hear voices, and quickly ducked into it. Inside, there was a washbasin, and a small wood-burning stove. There was no fire in it, but it was warm, and I sat near it. A window at the ceiling poured in moonlight. I huddled, hardly daring to breath, and then the voices went away. Off to one wall was a bench, in near-darkness. I stretched out on that. The stove was weird looking, like a giant, black, metal bird. Curious, I eased open a creaking hinge and peered inside. The soft glow of live coals warmed my face. "Bingo!" I whispered. From my back pocket, I dug out a my Cigarette case. Opening it, it was - - Empty. "That Lizard!"I wanted to scream. I restrained myself, and instead, slammed the tiny door shut. The pale orange light vanished. I lay back, opening and shutting the case in annoyance.
There was another sound from outside, of foot-steps. I remained where I was, careless. It was getting late into the night, and if the Gator or Rain saw me, it wouldn't matter. A figure's shadow filtered through, and a light came on. A light! An electric light! A guy came into the room, sighing tiredly. He put a bucket into the sink, and then turned in my direction, dropping a can of something in suprise when he saw me. "Hey," I said hoarsly. "Are there more lights like this in the Castle?" Withough waiting for an answer, I stood up. I was kinda short, but I don't let it get to me. "I think I've seen you before. The name's Kiri."

It took us a while to show her the castle. We had only gotten done with showing her two of the towers and half of the main floor when she dissapeared into an alcove. I realized that she had left, but Rain hadn't. I kept following her and waited for her to notice. I became more amused by each minute. It took her a LONG time to notice. When she did, she was furious.

For some unknown reason, I wanted to laugh. I was tired. I hadn't had sleep in nearly 24 hours. And here was a strange girl, saying she didn't remember my name, even though we had met not too long ago and oh, by the way, her name was Kiri. "Yeah. We met in one of the spare bedrooms earlier. There was a dragon and a blue haired librarian, in case you don't remember." Realizing that I was being too cross- she looked as tired as I was- I made a brief attempt at politness. "Look, I'd be friendlier if I weren't sleep-deprived and slightlly freaked out by that oversized lizard." Kiri snorted. "I'd be nicer too if I had my cigarettes and was over the jetlag. You know, I asked about the lights, NOT why you were a jerk." I gave a short bark of laughter. She definitely wasn't a prep. It sounded like old dad would've gotten along well with her. She was a druggie. "Yeah, well, I guess you get more info than you bargained for. No, there aren't any more lights like this in the house. I don't know why, but there aren't." She sighed irratibly. "Just great. Does this dung pile even have running water?" I bit back a smirk, knowing my answer would not get a good reaction. "Yeah. In two out of the six bathrooms. Believe me, you never want to have to clean those other four. Not that you'll ever have to." The last parts slipped out on it's own. Great, I thought, now she knows what everyone else does- I'm the local gutter trash. "I'll see you around. It's late and some of us don't use getting high as a relaxant." Okay, so that was unfair, but for some reason it rankled that she was a smoker. I should care less. I started to walk out of kitchen. The bucket wouldn't be hurt by an overnight soaking. It might even do it some good. And I could care less if I had offended the girl. She could deal with it.

"I am not an oversized lizard," I snapped as Jaid the fix-it began to leave the kitchen. They hadn't heard me sneak up behind them, "There are crocodiles that are much bigger than me. And yes this is the only room with electric LIGHTS. The reason that there isn't any more is because its EXPENSIVE to have it put in, and nearly IMPOSIBLE to get the wires through the walls. You all are lucky that this place is heated and air conditioned. That took all of his money last year getting it installed. If you want a Mage light, all you have to do is ask me. They're much more dependable than flashlights. Kiri, you should go to bed. Fix-it, you should too. You can stay here for the night if you would like. It's not a very friendly night out if you hadn't noticed. It's storming outside." I turned and left the room, flicking my tail and chirped. All of a suddeen there were two tiny mage lights hovering in front of each of the humans. They looked in amazement. "Pick them up," I snapped, "They won't hover for too much longer. If you want to hide their light then you can put them in a pocket." I chirped again and the electric light flicked off. "Come, I will show you to a room where you can stay Fix-it."

"I know you're not a lizard. But you haven't exactly said anything I could call you by, unless you prefer 'it' or 'Mr. Dragon'. And I've gone home on worse nights than this, thanks." I ignored the...what was the thing?...mage light? even though it had begun to drift towards the floor. The dragon glared at me. "You will have to come back to finish the window, will you not, Fix-it Jaid? So stay here. Save yourself a walk. You ought to be grateful." I supposed I ought to be, yes. But it was...twelve thirty? I hadn't been in the kitchen that long, no matter what the clock said. It did not take an hour to tell some one your name. I'd have to check it tomorrow. What a wonderful evening. "Fine. Thanks." The dragon led me up one of the back stairs to a short, narrow corridor that I had become familiar with. I ended up in a room whose floor I had had to partially repair at some point. It had been one of the first things I had done after I got the job. The dragon stalked off, growling over his shoulder, "Do not bother setting your watch alarm. I shall make sure you rise at an appropriate time." I flopped on the bed. d**n him! (OOC: excuse the language) How did he manage to read everyone's mind like a book? I lay awake, watching the shadows shift on the wall, for another hour or so. The wind's howling finally lulled me to sleep.

He was impertinent. Hmm. It was refreshing. I walked back to the kitchen to make sure that Kiri had left. The mage light I had made for Jaid lay on the floor. I blew on it and it disappeared. I then trotted off to his study and curled up on the large coushin that he had left for me. I grumbled. These new people did not seem very promising. What was this world coming too? I sighed and went to sleep.
